Glass screens had existed before, but not like this — not one that covered the entire face of a device, not one warm from your hand, not one that responded to the softest touch. Within a few years, this surface had become the default sensory experience of computing. We stopped noticing it.
There is a body of research on what this disappearance costs. Mechanoreceptors in the fingertips — Merkel discs, Meissner corpuscles, Ruffini endings, Pacinian corpuscles — each respond to different qualities of surface contact. Texture, pressure, vibration, stretch. These receptors are not merely sensory; they feed directly into the neural systems that govern attention, arousal, and emotional regulation. Touch is not a passive sense. It is a system for orienting to the world.
When we collapse all haptic experience into the uniform smoothness of glass, we are not creating a neutral surface. We are creating a surface that systematically bypasses a major channel of human cognition.
What would it mean to design digital surfaces that push back? Not necessarily in the crude sense of simulating buttons or textures, but in the deeper sense of giving the hand genuine information — information that corresponds to something real in the system state. A surface that feels different when the battery is low. A surface that responds differently when a document has unsaved changes. Haptics as semantic channel, not decoration.
This is the design space that most of the industry has not yet entered. It requires taking the body seriously as a site of intelligence — not just a vehicle for eyes pointed at screens.
