Every material has properties that the designer must understand and respect. Steel has tensile strength and thermal expansion. Wood has grain and moisture content. Glass has brittleness and refractive index. The properties of a material constrain what can be built with it, and ignoring them produces things that fail — bridges that corrode, chairs that crack, windows that shatter.

The modern information environment treats attention as infinite. The evidence suggests otherwise.

Attention is a material. It has properties. It is finite — a person has roughly four hours of deep focused attention available per day, and this number does not scale regardless of how important the task is. It fatigues — sustained attention degrades, and degraded attention makes errors that rested attention would not make. It is subject to depletion — attention spent on one thing is unavailable for another, a property called ego depletion in the psychological literature, whatever its ultimate neurological mechanism.

Attention also has a cost structure that is easy to misunderstand. Switching attention between tasks is not free. The overhead of a context switch — rebuilding the mental model of what you were doing, retrieving the relevant state, re-entering the problem — costs roughly twenty minutes of productive work. This means that a five-second interruption can cost twenty-five minutes of recovery time. Notification designers rarely account for this.

A designer who understands attention as a material approaches the question of notification very differently from one who does not. The question is not “how do we deliver information to the user?” but “at what cost does this delivery arrive, and is the value of the information worth that cost?” Most notifications fail this test badly. They deliver information of low marginal value at high attentional cost, disrupting the expensive mental states that the user worked to build.

Calm technology, as a design framework, takes the material properties of attention seriously. The design goal is not to demand the minimum possible attention — sometimes a task requires all of it — but to demand only what the task genuinely requires, and to release it when the task is complete. This sounds simple. It is not. Most of the software we use fails it comprehensively.
